What Small Dog Breed Is Best For You?

There are many types of small dog breeds, also know as toy dogs. Toy dogs originate from ancient lap dogs and are the smallest dogs available. These dogs were most likely breed from larger hunting and work dogs either for luxury or work purposes. Small dog breeds tend to be less expensive then other dogs because you don’t have to buy the large amounts of food etc. Medical costs will be similar no matter the dog breed.

Originally these small breeds came from ancient lap dogs. Some dogs were breed as smaller versions from hunting or work dogs. Small dogs were used to display wealth in olden days as well as attract fleas away from their owners. The class, small breed or toy dog came from competitions and traditional categories.

There are certain dog breeds that are exclusive to the toy dog breed; Shih Tzu and the Chihuahua. But there are other dogs that come in different sizes, both large and small like the poodle. All small dogs tend to have a lot of energy and character and are great pets. They are well suited to apartment living and are well suited for the elderly or disabled as they don’t need a lot of exercise.

The Chihuahua, Shih Tzu, Yorkshire Terrier and Toy Poodle are also great watchdogs. These dogs immediately notice anything unusual and start barking to alert you of the change. Most small dogs are easily trained though there are a few breeds that are stubborn and may take longer.

Most small breeds are very healthy but due to their size have a few health issues you need to be aware off. The most relevant is the tendency to break bones due to their size. However if you get a healthy dog from a reliable breeder and maintain its health then you shouldn’t have any problems.
