Learning About Shar Pei Grooming

by Melissa Coleman

Shar Pei dogs are very easy to recognize, namely by the loose folds of skin that are on their body as well as their frowning expressions. Shar Pei are squarely built and very powerful looking.

Shar Pei grooming for instance, requires special care and there are also specific tools that you are going to need to get started.

There are a number of things you need to keep in consideration when it comes to Shar Pei grooming, including brushing, bathing, nails, teeth and flea control. Bathing should be done frequently, at least once or twice a week, to keep the dirt and debris off their fur, especially out of the folds of skin. Just make sure that you push back the folds of skin as you are bathing them so that you can get in the creases. Brushing should be done both before and after the bath, in order to ensure that as much excess fur as possible comes off.

The first step to Shar Pei grooming is to give them a bath. Once you have done that you want to brush them again, and then clean their ears. This is important because Shar Pei have large ears, which tend to collect a lot of dirt and grime. When bathing it is a good idea is to use a waterless shampoo, so that you do not run the risk of getting any water in their ears. This is important with all dogs but especially with Shar Pei because of the large size of their ears.

Keeping their nails short and strong is also very important, and to do this the best idea is to get them outside for walks as much as you can. This will help keep their nails down, but you also want to trim them on a regular basis as well. For teeth, you can get some dog toothpaste and you want to brush their teeth and gums at least a couple times a week.

Grooming your Shar Pei, as with any other dog grooming, is incredibly important. Not only does proper and regular grooming help dogs to look as good as they can, but even more important it helps them to feel better about themselves and they behave better as a result. Shar Peis are beautiful dogs, truly stunning, as long as they are properly groomed.

Also keep in mind that waterless shampoos are best to use for Shar Pei grooming because they help to keep the water out of your dog’s ears. You can bathe the rest of their body regularly, but by using a waterless shampoo on their head you will be making sure you are not harming them in any way, as water in the ears can result in being potentially dangerous. Massaging your dog by hand before you bathe them is also a great idea because this helps to loosen up the fur and any excess will then come off with the water.
