Dog Training: The Six Common Mistakes To Avoid
When new trainers start training, they tend to make a lot of mistakes in their approach and methods in their training process. There are some mistakes that are common among most trainers.
High Expectation- The individual who makes this mistake is a true dog lover. The problem arises only when they start watching the tricks their neighbor’s dog can do or watch some well trained pets in their favorite sitcoms. Also sometimes when they go to park, they would have come across people who would have been enjoying the company of their dogs that are obedient and well trained. At that moment, they tend to forget all the time, money and patience that has gone into training these dogs.
Giving Up- This is also a common mistake. Most of the time dog owners lose patience or concentration to achieve the result which they expect from their dogs. They expect their dog to play Frisbee in an hour or so and if at all their dog fails to start playing in that period then they conclude that their dog isn’t going to learn at all.
Not being consistent- Always make sure that the dog responds to your words and acts accordingly. When you are in your business suit and if you tell your dog not to jump on you, then, don’t let them jump on you when you are wearing your jogging clothes either. Consistent training is important, if you want a well-trained dog.
Not following the lessons- By repeatedly and consistently training your dog, they will listen to your lessons and would love it. If you spend few minutes only on Monday and nothing until Saturday, then it would be difficult for your dog to learn the lessons.
Techniques- While it important to glean wisdom from other trainers experiences, using everything you hear can be detrimental. Each trainer has different ideas of how things should be done and trying to incorporate all of them will frustrate you and your pet. Rather, choose a method that works for you and be consistent and you will see much better results.
Training sessions- Training is a learning process and it is never completed. Your dog may learn a behavior and know it well. So why stop there? Your dog loves to learn and you are a good trainer. Why would you ever want less than the best your dog could be?
By knowing all these mistakes, you can now realize some of the common feelings that you might have found in yourself. So, solve the problem before it arises.
