Caring For Your Fish By Changing The Pond Water
The most important factor that the owner of a fish pond should look out is the water. The cleanliness of the water is where the fishes and plants are going to depend. If the only available day that you can clean the pond is once a week because of a hectic schedule you should improvise a way to keep the pond from getting dirty. This is why at least once every week a portion of your time is allotted so that the fishes are cared for properly.
Usually, the fishes are removed from the pond and transferred to a container then the water will be drained or partially draining the water and cleaning the pond while the fishes are still in. It is your choice. An advisable way to do it is by draining it partially so that the fishes are not unfamiliar to the temperature in a new environment. This is because the fishes could get sick.
By using a siphon or pump, remove only a portion of pond water, while you are at it, you should not forget to remove decaying vegetation, fallen leaves and other debris. You don’t want these things to stay inside your pond because they will decompose and will result into foul water which promotes diseases.
Make sure that while the level of water is still low, you should allow yourself to inspect the equipments which are suspended under water for any damage. Check the pumps. Scrutinize for damages which can result to intake blockage, electrical shock, or oil leakage. Inspect the tubes for rupture or stiffness status. Constrictions like these can affect the flow of water in waterfalls, fountains, or filters.
Also, for the pond liner you must be on the lookout for punctures or small tears that needs patching. If evidences of larger degradation or damage are present, this indicates that upgrading or replacement should be done. Electric cords should be checked with surface cracks or frays. If this is not taken care of, it can cause hazardous shock that can affect both humans and fishes.
Clean the filter to eliminate the visible debris that causes reduction of breakdown or flow of algae-promoting substances. Examine the fishes if you can see any signs of swollen abdomens, wounds or blotches. These conditions must be treated immediately.
This cannot be done in one sitting. Refilling of your pond may take some time or even overnight. It is like refilling a swimming pool, or at least half. Proper care of your fishes and their health will be depending on the water inside your pond which serves as their home.
