Adopt Rather Than Buy At Havanese Rescues

by Fiona Kelly

You’ve decided to adopt a Havanese or a Havanese mix from an animal shelter or Havanese rescue rather than buy a Havanese puppy. Congratulations! You will not only save about $1000 and a life, but you will also not contribute to continuing the puppy mills that supply pet stores. You have chosen the compassionate way to give a loving dog a new leash on life. (Sorry ? couldn’t resist).

Havanese breeders in the United States charge about $1000 per pup, because of the rarity of the breed. But why pay all of that money when there are perfectly loving, healthy and trained Havanese in Havanese rescues all over the country? Havanese rescue volunteers do not get any fame or glory from their hobby to lessen suffering in the world. They do their best to match abandoned Havanese to forever homes. You can also help lessen some of the suffering in the world by choosing to adopt your next dog rather than buy a puppy.

Rescue dogs are often a far better deal for you in terms of time, money and frustration. Bringing a new puppy home is exactly like bringing a new baby home. They need to be fed several times a day, learn to be housetrained and have no manners whatsoever. You have to teach the puppy how to be a dog.

Since the Havanese is a relatively rare breed in America, you need to do your homework to find a Havanese rescue. You can also ask for information from the Havanese Club of America (HCA) or from the AKC (American Kennel Club), which will get you in contact with the HCA. They should be able to tell you all about the dogs they have for adoption and what part of the country your prospective new best friend lives.

The main Havanese rescue charity organization in the United States is called (appropriately enough) Havanese Rescue, Inc. of Phoenix, Arizona. They rescue not only purebred Havanese, but mixes, too. But whatever dog rescue organization you meet, you will be thoroughly quizzed and your home checked to be sure you would be a good, loving owner to a hard-luck Havanese.

You can make sure there is one less abandoned dog in the world by checking out Havanese in shelters or national Havanese rescues, which you can find on line. You can check out all-breed animal rehoming websites like Petfinder.com or the Havanese Club of America Rescue.

If you are set on having a Havanese, be prepared to travel some distance to pick up your new friend, as Havanese rescues are not in all states. You will go through a screening process before you are allowed to adopt a Havanese.

Rescue dogs seem to realize what you have done for them, and love you just as much as if you had raised the dog from a puppy. Havanese are one of the healthier pure breeds, without the risk of breathing problems like with pug-nosed dogs or the risk of hip dysplasia like with very large dogs. Since they are small dogs, they can live comfortably in places from palaces to apartments. Please consider adopting a Havanese dog rather than spending a small fortune on a puppy.
